Description:
What are the social, economic, and political forces that have shaped Hip Hop as a cultural movement? How has Hip Hop both been influenced by and helped influence formations of race, gender, class, and sexuality across the African diaspora and the world? This course explores these questions and others by examining the history and development of Hip Hop in the broad context of immigration/migration, deindustrialization, the rise and demise of the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, globalization, and mass incarceration.
