SOCW 199 – Community Based Learning

There are still spaces available in SOCW 199 for the Spring 2013 semester.  SOCW 199 is also now open to all students interested in the course.  This course is a great opportunity to contribute to the surrounding community and a valuable way to earn solid volunteering experience.  Due to the nature of the class, we are limited to only 14 total seats, so space is limited.  The details for this course are listed below.

Credit: 2 hours.
 
This course provides students with a unique opportunity to examine civic engagement as it relates to their major through service learning and critical reflection.  Students will gain increased awareness about problems in the world around them as well as gain an appreciation for how they can make a difference in their communities. 
 
Students will participate in weekly service learning experiences at SOAR (Student Opportunities for After-School Resources).  SOAR is after-school tutoring program intended to improve reading and literacy skills of Latino children in grades 2-5 at Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign, Illinois.  You will provide homework and reading help, along with enrichment activities, to children who are most in need of assistance to boost their academic interest and ability
