We’re offering our first Rural Planning & Placemaking Workshop, UP 494-BW, this spring and we’re hoping for students in a variety of disciplines. The course will focus on the City of Hoopeston, about 70 minutes northeast of C-U, and will include archival research techniques, household survey, and Census research. Students will also conduct videotaped interviews, and will produce a short documentary video highlighting key challenges in the community, in part based on the Community Voice Method/CVM out of North Carolina. Prior coursework in Urban Planning would be helpful, but is not essential.
Urban Planning workshops are project-based, active learning opportunities, giving students experience in working in the field. Students should be comfortable working with residents and community leaders. Experience in qualitative research and/or media would be a plus.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
