Tito’s Horse and Goat Reference

Tito had a sentence in one of his papers that was elegant and lovely, but which might puzzle some readers. The sentence was “Tradition in sports is like a horse having a goat; they both need it.”

Everyone in our class would understand this reference, because we share a context for it. Other readers may be left scratching their heads. For Tito to go on and explain the story right here in the paper would be a detour, and take readers away from the original message. However, by providing a hyperlink or a footnote, he can satisfy the readers who don’t share our context.
