The "Secret Cinema" of the UK

A recent story in El PaĆs alerted us to an innovative new opportunity for viewing films in the UK: the Secret Cinema.

For Secret Cinema screenings, audience members sign up at the event’s official site, then dress in costumes and are taken to an undisclosed screening venue accompanied by actors prior to the screening of the film: what film they will be seeing is not announced in advance.

Past screenings have included a diverse range of titles such as Blade Runner, Alien, Lawrence of Arabia, Ghostbusters, and The Battle of Algiers.

A story in Design Week discusses the aesthetic aspects of the event, involving contributions from a team of over 100 people.

Though Secret Cinema events haven’t yet made it to the United States, one recent screening took place in Kabul, Afghanistan. This project, which grows in popularity with each new screening, definitely brings creativity to the viewing experience!
