The Office of Advancement within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is offering an exciting internship opportunity for the Fall 2018 semester (and possibly Spring 2019).

The goal of this position is to assist the Office of Advancement, primarily the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, with research, material creation, editing, faculty engagement, and communication. It is a valuable position that will encourage direct use of skills learned in the classroom. This position reports to and is under direct supervision of the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Intern will learn and be exposed to:

  • A systemic project to increase opportunities for faculty research funding from corporate and foundation partners
  • Internet research
  • Content writing and synthesis
  • Relationship building skills with faculty across LAS
  • Management of projects and deadlines

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Excellent written communication skills, including writing, proofreading skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Comfort working with key faculty and administrators in the College of LAS and its units
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite proficiently, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to learn quickly, proactively self-start, and multi-task; follow-through is a must.
  • Dedicated to having fun, curiosity, and an interest in learning more about faculty research spanning multiple disciplines

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research faculty members in LAS
    • Using available resources online (faculty profiles, Experts at Illinois database, and Google) identify faculty areas of expertise
  • Research synthesis and PowerPoint compilation
    • Create faculty profiles in PowerPoint based on data found during research phase, intern will need to synthesis data found to fit into one page template
    • Manage project toward deadline to keep project on track
  • Relationship building and communication with faculty
    • Communicate with faculty via email to finalize one-page profile
    • Track completion of profile by faculty using excel
    • Store completed documents in project folder
  • General Office of Advancement Administration
    • Perform various data entry work on occasion
    • Participate in weekly meetings with supervisor to recap progress and brainstorm new ideas
    • Maintain ownership of important archived files
    • Other projects or duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • The LAS Office of Advancement is currently located at 105 South Gregory Street, Urbana (near Lincoln and Green). Transportation to and from office will be the responsibility of the intern.

Knowledge Requirements:

Required:

  • Expected to maintain strict confidentiality
  • The ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced office
  • Strong writing and editing skills required

Preferred:

  • Enjoys working with students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Willingness to take on complex projects
  • Strong organizational skills

Start Date:  Position will be filled in early September, if not sooner. Duration is the entirety of the fall and possibly spring semester.

Compensation & Hours:  This is a paid, hourly position at $10/hr that requests a commitment of 10-15 hours a week. There is flexibility in scheduling, but a set weekly schedule is required and hours are to be completed in the office. Workstation and tools to complete duties as assigned will be provided.
