Getting to Champaign-Urbana

There are two broad options of getting to Urbana-Champaign:

  • Arriving by driving your own vehicle, or
  • Public transportation
    • Arriving at University of Illinois Willard Airport (CMI):
      This is the recommended option for public transportation. American Airlines has daily flights from/to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW); from/to O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
    • Arriving at Amtrak Illinois Terminal:
      The Illinois Terminal train station is operated by Amtrak and serves Illini (Chicago <-> Carbondale), Saluki (Chicago <-> Carbondale), and City of New Orleans (Chicago <-> New Orleans) passenger trains.
    • Arriving at O’Hare International Airport (ORD):
      There are four options from the O’Hare International Airport to Urbana-Champaign…
      • By flight to University of Illinois Willard Airport (CMI).
      • By train to Amtrak Illinois Terminal from Chicago Union Station
      • By bus:
        • Peoria Charter serves many different locations including both Chicago airports (O’Hare and Midway), Union Station in Chicago, and a number of Chicago suburbs. Pick up is available from Terminal 2 and Terminal 5 at the O’Hare International Airport with multiple drop-off points on-campus.
        • Greyhound has daily service between Chicago and Champaign. Pick up is available from downtown Chicago with drop-off at the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign.
    • Arriving at Central IL Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal Airport (BMI):

    • Arriving at Indianapolis International Airport (IND):

      • By bus:
        • Greyhound has daily services between Indianapolis and Champaign. Pick up is available from downtown Indianapolis Union Station with drop-off at the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign.
  • Parking On Campus
    • A permit is required to park in university lots 6:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday
    • Most university lots are open to park without a permit from 5:00 pm – 2:00 am
    • Housing lots and 24-hour lots are restricted at all times
    • 24-hour rental spaces and handicap spaces are enforced at all times
    • Restrictions are specified on signs at lot entrances. Day Visitor and Temporary Visitor permits may be purchased at the Parking Department at $14/day. Contact Parking for more information at 217-333-3530.

There are over 2,000 University of Illinois meters on campus, which are identified by a “Block I”. Meter rates of $1.25/hour may be paid by coins (quarters, dimes, or nickels), by app (MobileMeter, ParkMobile, PayByPhone), or by paystation (where available). Posted on each meter are the hours of enforcement and maximum time limits, which include 30 minutes, and 2, 8, or 10 hours.
