EMS
I have been actively involved in the European Mathematical Society (EMS): I was member of its Executive Committee in 2010-2012, and a member of its Meetings Committee (2010-17) and of its Publications Committee (2013-16). The EMS can only play a role in influencing science policies and science funding in Europe if many more mathematicians, european based and/or of european origin, became members of the EMS.
R&D Politics and More
While I was a professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, I was member of its Scientific Board, a member of the Senate and the Head of the Math Department. I had a chance to make a few contributions, trying to influence several issues that arose brought to these boards. You can find below some of the texts that I wrote. Unfortunately, some of these are in portuguese, and no translation is available.
- Evaluation of Faculty at IST – a case study: article published in the Newsletter of the EMS, based on an IST internal report, September 2011.
- Evaluation of faculty at IST and the new bylaws of faculty, November 2009 (in portuguese).
- Changing Paradigms, an opinion article about the elections for the IST statutory assembly (I was a member of List B), November 2007 (in portuguese).
- Teaching Math to Engineering Students, a study that I prepared for the Bolonha Reform Study Group at IST, October 2005 (in portuguese).
- Comments and Proposals concerning the proposal for new science funding legislation in Portugal, by Miguel Abreu and myself, April 2004 (in portuguese).
- Slides (MS PowerPoint) of my talk at the III Debate on Math Educations, organized by CIM, October 2003 (in portuguese).
- Portuguese Research-Universities: Why Not The Best? – slides of a talk given at IST by Prof. Michael Athans, MIT Emeritus professor and invited researcher at ISR-Lisboa, April, 2000.
- A polemic about IST in the Portuguese daily newspaper “Público” of April 11, 2000: original article by Vital Moreira and my reply (in portuguese).
- The Math Education of Science and Engineering: my talk given at the meeting organized by CIM 6-7, February, 1999 (in portuguese).
