Lynne M. Thomas, head of The Rare Book & Manuscript Library, has received science fiction’s most prestigious award, the Hugo Award– in the Best Semiprozine category for her work on Uncanny Magazine. Thomas is the co-editor-in-chief and co-publisher with her husband, Michael Damian Thomas. The award includes Managing/Poetry Editor Chimedum Ohaegbu, Managing Editor Monte Lin, Nonfiction Editor Meg Elison, and Podcast Producers Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky. “I’m absolutely thrilled to receive the recognition of the Hugo Award for Best Semiprozine. This means a lot to our family because the bulk of last year’s issues of Uncanny Magazine were produced while our daughter was hospitalized, entered palliative care, and I also had a major surgery.”

Two stories published in Uncanny Magazine were also on the Hugo Award ballot. “If You Find Yourself Speaking to God, Address God with the Informal You “by John Chu was a finalist for the Best Novelette Hugo Award, and “Rabbit Test” by Samantha Mills won the Best Short Story Hugo Award. 

The awards were announced on Saturday, October 21, at Chengdu Worldcon, the 81st World Science Fiction Convention in Chengdu, China. The Hugo Award was first presented in 1953 and then awarded every year since 1955 by members of the World Science Fiction Society at the World Science Fiction Convention.
