Volunteer

  • What does it mean to volunteer for the COASTS project?

COASTS volunteers will be trained to collect data on beach elevation and longshore current (i.e. currents that run parallel to the shoreline). Every month, you will have the option to sign up for 1-3 data collection surveys. A typical survey last approximately 2-3 hours, depending on how many volunteers take part, and of course how much fun you’re having on the beach! Survey dates and times will vary, but we hope that most volunteers will join us for at least 1 monthly survey.

  • Will I do surveys alone?

No. COASTS data collection requires small groups of volunteers to work together. In addition to working with fellow volunteers, a project coordinator will be on-site to distribute equipment, collect data sheets, answer questions, and offer support where needed.

  • How do I sign up?

Volunteers are managed by individual Site Coordinators for each of our monitored beaches. For information on upcoming training dates & locations, please contact Research Coordinator Jenny Bueno- jbueno6@illinois.edu.
