Right now some of the work I’m doing for ISE includes helping out with keeping the website updated, but soon (hopefully) someone will be hired to take charge of the public affairs/marketing responsibilities for the department. They’ll be working particularly closely with Advancement and Student/Alumni Relations. (And perhaps I’ll get to help them out, too!)
There is a lot of overlap between technical writing and marketing–to “market” any research group successfully one needs to quickly acquire a broad and (reasonably) deep understanding of the group’s work, a sense of the research communities they inhabit, and a cogent and effective strategy for communicating to the rest of the world how valuable that work is. ISE is currently looking for someone with the knowledge and experience to construct that strategy from scratch. Might that be you, dear reader?
