Grad Hourly Position (Seo): Data Science Package Developer/Researcher

Data Science Package Developer/Researcher

Project Type: Paid
Open to: Masters & Doctoral Students

The Accessible Computing Lab at the iSchool is seeking an hourly R developer who has an expertise in interactive data visualizations with {ggplot2} and {shiny}. This is a graduate hourly position, working an average of 10 HRs a week, for up to 9 months and a half. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in user interface and universal design to data science for all. The Accessible Computing Lab has received the Wallace Foundation grant to develop an accessible data visualization system for blind people to easily understand and interact with data science graphs in a non-visual way using multi-modal representations, such as sounds, speech, and braille. As part of the project, the student engineer will be working with Dr. JooYoung Seo, an RStudio’s certified data science partner, to develop an open-source data science package for an accessible interactive data viz dashboard using statistical-computing R and {ggplot2} and {shiny} packages. Accessibility and usability are very much intertwined in this project. Just like curbs cuts help more than just people in wheelchairs, accessibility features added to user interfaces make the interfaces more usable by everyone.

Required Skills:

  • Strong JavaScript skills and front-end dev experiences.
  • Deep understanding in {ggplot2} and {shiny} packages.
  • Experience with R package development
  • User Interface Design
  • Usability Testing

Masters students will be paid up to: $18/hr
Doctoral students will be paid up to: $20/hr

Interested applicants should email their resume and cover letter to Dr. Seo, or complete an application via Handshake.
