General Practice Overview

FAQ, Expectations, and Assertions

What is General Practice?
The general practice is the largest and main branch of Illini World Taekwondo’s instructional establishments. It is structured around belt advancement and holistic club interactions through a range of group, belt, and individual practice sections. This practice is led by Instructors and mentors, and meets 3 times a week during the first hour of practice.

What are the goals of this practice?
The general practice seeks to provide the best possible instruction and experience for those who want to learn Taekwondo- whether they are high-dan black belts, or have never tried a martial art before. In this way, members learn about all aspects and disciplines of Taekwondo. This is achieved through belt requirements and structured rank systems.

Who can join? How do they join?
Any UIUC student can join the general practice, at any point in the school year, by showing up to a practice in workout clothes. However, access to full club functions requires membership.

Expectations:
At its core, Illini World Taekwondo is an organization with a focus on Taekwondo practice. As such, basic taekwondo principles are expected during practice times;

  1. Discipline – members realize that practice time is practice time, and commit to focusing on their instructions during these times.
    • Realize that while the club promotes socialization before and after practices and with socials, the practices themselves should be taken seriously.
  2. Decorum – whenever possible, neat, ironed uniforms appropriate to one’s status will be worn. The basic color belt uniform is a white open-cut Taekwondo uniform, but white v-neck Taekwondo uniforms are also acceptable.
  3. Respect – the basic conceptions of bowing, seniority, and rank are generally conserved. Under certain pretenses, yes sir/ma’am are expected. Other things include:
    • Fostering collaborative community
    • Bowing on and off the mats
    • Bowing at the beginning and end of class

Subcategory: Belt Tests
Belt testing should be taken with a level of seriousness. While it is not the goal of instructors to fail their members, there are multiple instances in which the issue may arise.

  • No pretest and/or no essay submission: Fail/Incomplete
  • Not knowing belt requirements: Fail
  • Underperforming certain specific requirements: Incomplete/Conditional Pass
  • Did not bring gear (upper ranks): Incomplete
  • Discourtesy (poor attitude, no uniform): Various
