Becoming a Mentor or Instructor

  • Mentors of the general practice act as assistants and group leaders under the direction of instructors. Any member of blue belt rank or above is eligible to become a mentor. Mentors must be approved by the IWT apparatus and its instructors, and do not have direct-communication responsibilities with HMD.
    • Mentorship is a semester-long commitment. Applications open at the end of each semester.
    • Mentors are expected to attend training standardization seminars directed by Instructors and the Vice President at various points during the semester.
  • Instructors of the general practice act as the main link between Illini World Taekwondo and HMD Academy. They are also generally considered the ‘faces’ of the club. For these reasons, Instructors must be 1) selected or approved by the IWT apparatus, and 2) certified through the HMD Academy Instructor Program. Any high color belt rank or black belt member is eligible for approval and certification, but having one does not explicitly guarantee the other.
    • HMD certification is a 1.5 semester-long commitment and will directly engage the participant in both IWT and HMD politics. Selections for HMD certification start in September of every year.
    • Instructorship is a highly involved role. If interested, speak or set up a meeting with a current instructor.
