Computational Gastronomy at Telefonica: From elBulli to FoodBridging

Speaker: Pere Obrador, Telefonica R&D

Abstract: Telefonica R&D made its headway into gastronomy through an Open Innovation collaboration with elBulliFoundation, which lasted for 4 years. In parallel, the Telefonica R&D scientific group started doing research in how to apply Big Data to the gastronomy world. To be more specific, we worked in the up and coming area of Ingredient Networks. After two years of research, the Project FoodBridging was started, from the combination of Knowledge learnt from the gastronomy world, which we learnt through our collaboration with elBulliFoundation, and the new ways to recommend ingredients that were created in the Scientific Group. FoodBridging has been developed, with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, programmers, designers and cooks, in order to provide Cooks and Foodies with a simple tool to help them navigate those complex ingredient networks, so as to provide inspirational and creative ingredient recommendations, in a visual and interactive way.
