An invisible disability is a physical, mental, or neurological condition that can’t be seen from the outside. But it can impact someone’s movements, senses, or activities according to the Invisible Disabilities Association. Students with invisible disabilities can be easily misunderstood as lazy, weak, inactive, or antisocial because they look “normal” in appearance while they just need proper assistance. A student from the department of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) will give a thorough introduction to invisible disabilities, proper assistance needed by students with invisible disabilities, and resources on campus. The workshop will be held on Oct. 27th at Digital Computer Laboratory 1265 from 4 pm to 5:15 pm. A zoom link will also be available for people who can’t make it in person. The racist rhetoric used to describe COVID-19 led to an outburst of hostility and harassment directed at Chinese and other Asian communities. However, the antecedents of anti-Asian bias in America have a long history and invaded academia already. According to “Racial and ethnic disparities persist in NSF funding decisions”, Asian researchers would have to write 40% more proposals to be funded at the same rate as White scientists. David Chih, the director of the UIUC Asian American Cultural Center will address the issue of Anti-Ascian Racism in Academia.  The workshop will be held on Nov. 1st at Digital Computer Laboratory 1265 from 4 pm to 5:15 pm. • Nov. 16th: Cultural Barriers of First-gen College Student

One first-gen college student at Allies in STEM said: “As the first college student in my entire family, I literally felt helpless. I didn’t understand how to explore my interests through courses or communicate with professors and ask for guidance. I didn’t know what experiences I should have for jobs or graduate school. The worst was I didn’t even realize I could ask for help. The only thing I knew was that I was obviously behind my peers and might waste the money my family put on me.” That’s why Tepora Su’a,  Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Chemical Sciences, will share her experience and resources for underserved students. The workshop will be held on Nov. 16th at Digital Computer Laboratory 1265 from 4 pm to 5:15 pm. A zoom link will also be available for people who can’t make it in person.
