Travel Grants to Participate in the University of North Carolina Brussels Summer Program
The University of Illinois EUC will be offering three travel grants to students participating in the University of North Carolina’s EU Center of Excellence Brussels Study Tour of EU Institutions, June 15-21, 2013. These EUC undergraduate travel grants provide funds to cover travel costs and accommodations associated with participating in the University of North Carolina’s Brussels EU summer program. Undergraduate students in all disciplines and departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible.

Program Description:  In ACES 298, students will study the many issues of sustainability in an international setting. You will start on an organic coffee farm, meet Brazilian farmers striving to protect their farms and communities while increasing their profits by growing a variety of crops. You’ll stay in a sustainable community and learn about permaculture, holistic living and local food. And you will explore a variety of different ecosystems you can’t find in Illinois.

Money for Study in Sweden

The Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures is pleased to announce an award competition to facilitate study abroad in Sweden during summer 2013 or academic year 2013-14.  The Anna Jensen Memorial Scandinavian Award is a prize in the amount of $1,500 to facilitate study or research in Sweden.  To apply, please submit a 500-word application statement and include your most recent University of Illinois transcript (unofficial is fine). Ideal applicants are students who have been taking Scandinavian courses, or who articulate plans to do so during their time of study abroad. The statement should clearly outline:
• your reasons for applying
• how a period of study in Sweden is important to your studies and to your future career plans
• how you expect to use the award (you may include a basic budget)
• what your plans are to continue Swedish and Scandinavian Studies once you return.
You may also address in your application if there are special needs or circumstances that motivate your application.
Submit all application materials to the mailbox of Dr. Mark Safstrom, 2090 Foreign Languages Building by 4:45 PM on February 15, 2013.

LAS 490 Literary Translation

Professor Antoine Cazé,  Université of Paris Diderot, will be teaching LAS 490 – Literary Translation, “Translation Beyond Invisibility:  How to Weaken Texts,” at the University of IL from March 12-April 11, 2013.  This is a great opportunity to be taught by faculty from one of our partner universities.   Professor Cazé is the Director of the Paris VII Center for Translation Studies and a well-known translator of American literature into French.

Please join us for lunch and learn more about the Translation Study Abroad program and how you can join us this summer in the European Union. Please RSVP to Elizabeth Mosley (emosley@illinois.edu) by Friday, February 8th so that we will know how much food to order.

The purpose of this two week intensive study abroad course is to expose students to the dynamics of the geo-political environment of the European Union and provide hands-on experience with the translator’s role and responsibility as mediator and communicator in today’s European multi-lingual and multi-cultural societies. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in any major who are interested in pursuing the Certificate in Translation Studies. This course will be of particular interest to students in foreign languages, cultures, and linguistics, political science, international studies, European Union Studies, law and business. The program consists of behind-the-scenes visits to international agencies and cultural sites relevant to language and culture studies. Countries visited include Belgium and France. This experience can lead to internships in the EU.

Study Abroad in Australia

Please join us for an informational session about a study abroad opportunity to Australia.  This 2 week program will take place over winter-mester 2013/2014 and focus primarily on health.
 
This 2-week study abroad program starts in Sydney where the group will examine the relationship between health and diversity within Australian society through a series of introductory lectures and accompanying activities. The second part of the program takes places in Adelaide and the surrounding area. The group will learn about the health and living issues faced by people in rural areas of South Australia. Indigenous health care is the main focus of this part of the program and the group will spend time with the local indigenous community and learn about local health initiatives.

GLBL 298 courses abroad

Spend three weeks of your summer experiencing life in a different country, earning academic credit, and enhancing your learning through a field study! Deadline to apply is February 11th!
 
LAS Global Studies is offering five GLBL 298 courses this spring that go abroad this summer.  Topics range from service learning to business to history and travel to Jordan, Croatia, Ecuador, Turkey and Israel, or Italy.  All of the courses are taught in English (or the language being studied) and offer ample opportunities for you to explore local culture and contemporary life. SUMMER COURSE IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN AND THE NORWEGIAN ARCTIC

SAO-LAS: Stockholm Summer Arctic Program
“Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic”

Program Dates: June 10 – July 15,
2013

In this intensive six-week program, participants stud
y the multifaceted history of human settlement in the Arctic, engaging with political, environmental and cultural perspectives. UIUC students participate together with students from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.  Taught on location in Stockholm, Sweden and Svalbard, Norway.  The program fulfills 6 hours of course credit (GLBL 499, ESE 497, SCAN 496). Enrollment is open to both science and non-science majors – applicants must be junior status or have instructor’s consent. Program Fee: TBA.
