Fall 2013 International Career Certificate (ICC) Series

Please help us promote our Fall 2013 International Student Career Certificate (ICC) Program!   This workshop-based program helps international students learn strategies to become more competitive in the US internship/job market, focusing on activities that will enhance their networking, speaking, and self-marketing skills.  At each workshop, we will have special guests including recruiters, content experts, and successful international students who will share their expert advice and tips.   To receive the certificate, students must attend 5 of the 8 workshops and use 3 of our services: mock interview, resume or cover letter review, and a one-on-one appointment.  For more details and to register, students can visit our international students career services website: http://www.intlconnect.illinois.edu/tccservices

Study Abroad Course to Cyprus: GLBL 298 "Conflict and Post-Conflict Resolution in Modern Cyprus: Life and Culture Divided by a Wall "

Modern Greek Studies will be making available to our students a study abroad course to Cyprus this Fall 2013 through Global Studies, LAS (GLBL 298). The study abroad course will be entitled “Conflict and Post-Conflict Resolution in Modern Cyprus: Life and Culture Divided by a Wall” and is sponsored by Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Study Abroad. I would be most grateful if you led students know about this. A full description and most information come below, but also in the electronic flyer I am attaching herewith.

Description: This course explores the relationship between the nation and the state in the Eastern Mediterranean through a focus on the island of Cyprus. What has determined relations between ethnic groups living on the island? How did Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots end up engaged in an ethnic conflict in the 1960s, leading to the invasion of the Turkish army and partition of the island in 1974? What measures have been taken for post-conflict resolution since then? Finally, how is life and culture in a split country like Cyprus divided by a wall? Students will be able to visit the island and enrich their knowledge on its history and culture; see unique ancient, medieval, and modern monuments; and meet with high-ranking state officials, NGO activists, and others who lived through the events of the 1960s and 1970s to hear what happened and how those events changed people’s lives.

RUSS 115 for Fall 2013

RUSS 115: INTRODUCTION TO RUSSIAN CULTURE

A survey course going back to medieval times, it will focus on overarching themes in the culture of Russia and the Soviet Union, presented always in correlation with the historical context: the distinctiveness of Russian culture, and how that has been defined at various moments over the past thousand-plus years for both internal purposes and by an intrigued West; and Russia as a cultural space between West and East (the Mongol yoke; Ivan the Terrible as Asiatic; the cultural reverberations of imperial expansion of Muscovy and Russia into Europe, the Siberia, the Americas, the Caucasus and Central Asia; the notion of Westernization). Students taking this course will be introduced to the Russian language; foundational narratives of Russian collective memory; salient features of Russian Orthodoxy and its involvement in political and larger culture spheres; and many peak achievements of Russian literature, film, music, architecture and visual arts.
