My Research

My research interests focus on non-destructive testing of civil infrastructures including pavements, bridges and railroads. During my Master’s research, I developed an advanced signal processing technique based on discrete wavelet transform to interpret the complex ground penetrating radar (GPR) data collected from railroad ballast. The tool I developed enables a huge amount of data to be processed automatically, continuously, quickly and without user dependence, which has not previously been achieved by other data processing approaches. Currently, I am now developing an application of asphalt pavement compaction monitoring using GPR. This technique would enable a compactor operator to monitor the density change after each compaction pass and to make adjustments in real time. This new technique holds promise for developing an “intelligent” compactor in the near future.
