Image of Research

The Image of Research is composed of two separate annual multidisciplinary competitions celebrating the diversity and breadth of student research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Graduate Image of Research, which starts accepting entries in late fall semester, is organized by the Scholarly Commons of the University Library and the Graduate College and is supported by a generous gift to the Scholarly Commons from the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Submissions accepted through January 22, 2018.
See details and submit online.

The Undergraduate Image of Research, which begins with the spring semester, is organized by the Scholarly Commons and the Office of Undergraduate Research and is supported by a generous gift from the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

In both competitions, students are invited to submit entries consisting of an image and brief text that articulates how the image relates to the research. Entries are judged by a multidisciplinary panel for:

  • Connection between image, text, and research
  • Originality
  • Visual Impact

All images submitted will be archived in IDEALS, hosted by the University Library for long term preservation. The images are also shared on Instagram by the Graduate College and the University Library.

Image of Research at Illinois was inspired by the Image of Research competition at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
