Illinois International Photo Contest

Have you recently studied abroad? Are you studying abroad now?

Submit your photos to the International Photo Contest!

This year’s theme is:

Bringing together Our campus, Our community, Our world.

You can submit photos in these categories:

  • Personal connection:  you and the people you have met abroad (e.g. host family, roommate, and local acquaintances/friends)
  • Academic connection:  you, your teachers, and your classmates (e.g. studying and engagement in or out of the classroom)
  • Career connection:  you gaining practical/professional experience (e.g. volunteering, internship, fieldwork, research)

Rules & Requirements

  • Please note: this contest does not overlap with our November Call for Photos, if you submitted a photo(s) to this call that you would like to be considered for this contest, please resubmit the photo(s) by following the requirement/submission details below.
  • Entrants must be current students or recent graduates who have studied abroad through a University of Illinois program or gone abroad with a University of Illinois RSO. International student photos representing their experiences in the U.S will also be accepted.
  • Entrants may submit up to one photo per category, in as many categories as desired. Photos must be of high quality (1MB+).
  • We encourage you to submit a 100-300 word explanation on how your photo illustrates your personal/academic/career connection with your host community. Entries will be judged both on the quality of the photo(s) and the accompanying essay.
  • Photos must be original work and have been taken during the entrant’s study abroad program.
  • Photos must be appropriate for posting on university materials. Obscene, provocative, or otherwise questionable content will not be considered.
  • Entries are due on or before Friday, March 8, 2013 to Bridget Doyle at illinois.international.photo@gmail.com. Entries received after the deadline will not be eligible.
  • Entries that fail to comply with the Entry Requirements will be disqualified.
  • Please be mindful that there may be restrictions about taking photographs during certain cultural and/or religious events, so please inform yourself before you start taking photos. Similarly, in order to avoid causing offense, it is always preferable to ask for permission before photographing someone you don’t know.

Judging & Awards

Preference will be given to those who submit essays along with their photographs. Winners will be announced on April 5th, 2012. A panel of students and staff will vote to decide the winning photographs. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in all 3 categories. Winning photos and essays will be displayed during International Week (April 8-14, 2013) and published in the Illinois International Review. Winning photographs will also be featured on the website for the Study Abroad Office (studyabroad.illinois.edu) and International Programs and Studies (http://ilint.illinois.edu/).

Ownership

Photographers retain the copyright of their photographs.  But, by entering the contest, photographers agree to have their submitted photograph(s) displayed at all International Week events; on the Study Abroad Office (SAO), International Week (IW), and International Programs and Studies (IPS) websites; and any other distribution materials without any fee or other form of compensation, and agree that Study Abroad Office and International Programs and Studies may make and retain copies of the photograph for archival purposes.

Entries (including non-winning entries) may be selected for display or use in other SAO, IW, or IPS materials without permission from the photographer.  Entries will never be used by any of these units in any manner for sales.  In the event that ownership of any photograph submitted to this competition is contested in any manner, SAO, IW, and IPS retain the discretion to disqualify that photograph and discontinue use of the photograph. ALL photos (both winners and non-winners) will become the property of the Study Abroad Office, International Week, and International Programs and Studies and will not be returned.
