Craft Tech Fair

“We should have a fair,” Miriam said one day. Of course we should! Why didn’t I think of that?

Because I have no idea how to run a fair. Duh.

But it was a fantastic idea, so I agreed immediately. Over the next few days, we set a tentative date and started writing down ideas of who we could get to come and what we would do. It would be on a Saturday, so people who can’t make Tech Time at all could maybe make this. And it would be open to the IPA. And we’d have crafts. And games. And a Scratch table, which means something totally different if you Google it.

The plan slowly took form as we reached out across the community for people to pitch in to our stone soup, and we had an amazing turnout! Over 100 people came, and we had all sorts of activities: hardware disassembly, including portable CD players, cell phones, and laptops; coding in Scratch; a CU wiki scavenger hunt led by InfoCity; a Raspberry Pi station run by Adriana O’Brien of Wolfram Research, who also runs our Raspberry Pi clubs; handmade bookmarks, kaleidoscopes, ornaments, and other decorations; a number of demonstrations run by the folks from the FabLab; a Minecraft lounge; a Makey-Makey music demo set up by Mr. Lash; and a photo booth run by a parent. Quite the line-up!

I spent most of the time visiting the various stations to make sure everything was running smoothly, and also coordinating the students who had signed up to run the Scratch table in shifts, but I was able to get a couple quick videos. All in all, it was a wonderful day of the community coming together to celebrate itself and see what we’ve been up to.
