Site Update: Urbana Neighborhood Connections Center

Just like Champaign Public Library, work at the Urbana Neighborhood Connections Center (UNCC) hasn’t stopped with the end of the grant. Community Ambassador, Hailley Fargo, continued with UNCC, stepping into a slightly different, yet still digital literacy focused, role. The big highlights include.

  • In the spring of 2015, Hailley conducted research with the students at the center trying to see what sort of impact DL4ALL had on this site. Her research turned into a poster and paper which was presented at the Community Informatics Research Network Conference (CIRN) in November 2015. The paper can be found in the conference proceedings (page 66) and the poster is below.

  • Hailley continued to work at UNCC for the 2015-2016 school year. During this time she was welcomed back by many familiar faces and got to know even more students who started coming to the center. This allowed Hailley to continue to teach digital literacy, both formally and informally, during after-school computer time as well as school-out days.
  • UNCC saw several volunteers from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) including one volunteer, Cameron, who spent the entire year getting to know the center and providing technology support.
  • UNCC expanded their computer labs, adding an additional four computers to the back of the center for students receiving more specialized attention on reading and math skills.
  • UNCC’s summer program is now underway, serving 60-85 students Monday through Friday. Hailley created a website to document what the kids have been up to this summer. Please check it out!
