Welcome to the Translational Research towards Educational Equity (TREE) Lab!

We are the Translational Research towards Educational Equity (TREE) Lab, a group of scholars interested in exploring the development of critical consciousness in an effort to make schools more equitable and just spaces for students of color using mixed methods. We have a particular emphasis on understanding how Black parent critical consciousness relates to the way they engage with their children’s schools and the ways in which they advocate for their children’s educational futures.

The TREE Lab utilizes psychological theories and concepts to better understand educational inequities present in public schools with the aim of working towards rectifying them and creating positive family & school collaborations. We engage both quantitative and qualitative research methods to explore how key stakeholders understand the educational landscape to better understand ways to make positive change for all students.

Our Mission

The TREE Lab’s mission is guided by the values of equity, communication, inquiry, and professional development.

  1. We aim to foster a space where everyone feels welcomed, genuinely valued, and supported. Further, within this lab, we work to ensure that all voices are heard and hold equal weight. There are undoubtedly power imbalances within a lab where there is a mix of undergraduate students, graduate students, and a faculty member. Nevertheless, we aim to collectively provide constructive feedback, which will make us all better researchers, writers, and members of the lab, university, and broader community. We also expect all constructive feedback to be respectful, recognizing our diversity of ideas and lived experiences.
  2. We aim to conduct research that is an authentic collective endeavor between families, students, educators, community members, and researchers to advocate for equitable educational spaces that support the educational thriving of students of color. To this end, we challenge systemic racism manifested in schools and use critical theories to advance socially just educational practices and policies.
  3. Lastly, we place a strong emphasis on clear and frequent communication, mentorship, and meeting individuals where they are. As long as you are open to learning, committed to doing your best, and willing to take initiative, then you will thrive in the TREE Lab, and we hope that you learn much and meet your goals along the way.
