Our students in ENG 598 – Teaching & Leadership visited second grade classrooms in Booker T. Washington STEM Academy to deliver their service-learning projects.

We hosted the second annual one-day summer workshop with 15 local K-12 educators at Siebel Center for Design this month. We brainstormed ideas for the next interaction of the service-learning project to connect all stakeholders – Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), Research Assistants/Educational Experts (university faculty/students), and receivers (K–12 teachers/students).

Our two papers, one on the summer workshop with K-12 educators, another on a 16-week course’s impact on technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) of graduate teaching assistants, have been accepted for the 2023 ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition in Baltimore, Maryland.

Six teams of engineering graduate students from ENG 598: Teaching & Leadership presented their service-learning projects to first and second grade students at Booker T. Washington STEM Academy at the end of April. Our school visit was featured in a news article by Illinois Newsroom: Booker T. Washington students focus on ‘fun science’ on Fridays.
