Vectors and Physics

Vectors are Everywhere!

Are you confused about vectors and why they’re important?  Do you understand what a vector is but unclear on why we need them?

You’re not alone!

Vectors convey important information, and we find them everywhere.  Have you ever:

  • Used a map to help you find your classroom?  You used vectors!
  • Given someone the address to your house?  You used vectors!
  • Have you ever built or made something that required multiple dimensions to complete?  You used vectors!

There are many different types of vectors that are used to describe different quantities.

In our physics classes we use spacial vectors.  These are vectors that describe a quantity as it experiences motion.

Some common spacial vectors used in our physics classes are:

  • displacement
  • velocity
  • acceleration

From these vectors we are able to make even more vectors!

By the end of the Vectors and Physics clinic module you should be able to:

  • Explain why we use vectors to describe physical quantities.
  • Graphically add vectors.
  • Analyze the result of vector addition.
  • Use vector geometry to build your conceptual understanding of physics problems
