News From a JOUR200 Student’s Perspective

As the Journalism 200 class comes to an end, I as a student have come to realize the importance of press and how it differs from such as advertising. I have become very fond of a quote, said by Lord Northcliff, which certainly applies to what I am trying to convey.

“News is something someone wants suppressed. Everything else is just advertising”

– Lord Northcliff

I have come to believe that journalism is more about trying to reveal something, that the public are yet unknown of. Although journalists have to tell a story to keep the readers interested, journalism is more research than it is a story. Like Lord Northcliff says, “everything else is just advertising,” something I find to be very true. As I have read more and more news stories over the past semester, I have come to see what actually is news to me and the public, and what is not. The rest is just advertisement for people and other things. I do not disagree, nor do I agree with this way of writing news. I think it is more important for everyone to understand what kind of news they need, instead of what kind of news they want. We only have the journalists to rely on for what is happening on the other side of the globe, and if we can not trust them to do their job, we are left unknowing and ignorant.
