Rijeka: European Cultural Capital City

By IBIP students Will and Lindsey

Hey guys! This is Will and Lindsey, and today we took a trip to Rijeka. We started the day off with a 45 minutes bus ride to the city. We first visited Trsat castle overlooking the city which played an important role in different wars. It was right across a beautiful view of the city. The river was a border for thirty years in the first half of the twentieth century. The city has palaces in the middle of the working port. The residential houses were built around it, and much of the new architecture was built from the 40s-60s.

Next, we visited RiHub, which is a business hub and co-working space for start-ups that is bustling during the week. People also go to see seminars and workshops on business and entrepreneurship. After presentations on the development history of Rijeka and the EU and private framework of investments in Rijeka, we walked through the walking-zone to the Croatian National Theater.

The first theatre was built in 1765. The name of the theatre has changed many times over the past several decades. We were given a tour of the beautiful theatre. We also had some free time to explore the city a little, and we bought the best strawberries from a street market. We had lunch around 3, and then took the bus back to the hostel. Overall, it was a good day!
