Welcome to the research homepage for Dr. Joe Tom at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My research focuses on problems at the intersection of geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, and sediment transport to address important engineering challenges for society, including offshore energy and coastal resilience. Please have a look around the website to find out more about my research and potential opportunities.
I joined the Department of Civil Engineering at UIUC as an assistant professor in January 2020, where I sit within the Geotechnical Engineering Group. Prior to joining UIUC, I was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia, where I also completed my PhD in 2018. I first moved to Australia in 2011 (after completing my BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering at Mississippi State University and the University of California, Davis) to work for the offshore geotechnical engineering consulting firm Advanced Geomechanics (now Fugro).
