Network Programs
- Short term visits: This program provides funding for faculty or postdocs at one node to visit other nodes for up to two weeks. The program can also be used for small groups of collaborators to meet for periods of intense concentration of on-going collaborative projects or to get new projects started.
- Exchanges: This program provides funding for faculty or postdocs to spend up to a semester away from their home institution working with other network members. Support for exchanges includes travel expenses and subsistence (for faculty) or a stipend (for postdocs).
- Workshops: This program provides funding for small (about 25 people) workshops proposed and organized by network members.
- Graduate Internships: This program provides funding for graduate students to intern for up to six months with a research group or individual network member at any node (other than their home node).
- Summer Research Experiences for Graduate Students (REGS): This program provides funding for graduate students to do summer research projects offered by network members.
Use of the programs to attend meetings [Updated on May 1, 2018]: the Short Term Visits, Exchanges, or Graduate Internships programs are not intended to fund travel for the sole purpose of attending meetings or conferences. The primary purpose of these programs is to facilitate research interactions between network members at different nodes.While such interactions may take place at locations and at times that – in addition to the primary purpose of the visit – facilitate attendance at a meeting, visits of this nature will be given low priority when deciding how to allocate the remaining funds in the GEAR budgets. Please note also that when applying to use the programs in this way, the application should emphasize the primary purpose of the visit, i.e. it should make clear which GEAR members will be getting together and for what purpose.
Network-wide Gatherings
In addition to the above Network Programs, GEAR will sponsor the following network-wide gatherings:
- Network Retreats: Planned for years 1, 3, and 5, the Retreats will be organized and hosted by the network hubs (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland and Stanford University).
- Junior Retreats: Organized for and by graduate students and postdocs, the Junior Retreats will be two-week schools preceding the Network Retreats.
Please note that the regulations of the National Science Foundation impose the following restrictions on funding by GEAR:
- Foreign participants at nodes outside the U.S. are eligible for funding to travel to U.S. nodes but NOT to nodes outside the U.S.
- Foreign participants at US nodes are eligible for funding to travel to any node.
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents at any node are eligible for funding to travel to any other node.
[A foreign participant is one who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.]
