Maya A. Rodríguez-Reyes is a second year PhD student in the Department of Sociology of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a grad minor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Department. Maya is from Puerto Rico where she completed her undergrad studies and was Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow. Currently, she is working on racial identifications of Puerto Ricans post hurricane María and PROMESA, and the development of the conceptualizations of race for Puerto Ricans, particularly in crises. Her work and research interests focus on racial identifications, colonialism, music and political mobilizations, gender and sexualities, incarceration, and Puerto Rico.
