About the Speaker Series

Data protection and privacy are growing concerns in our ever more connected world. Some believe that over the next decade, data privacy will be recognized as one of society’s most pressing problems. Therefore, the School of Information Sciences in collaboration with the European Union Center at the University of Illinois is pleased to offer this timely seminar series which brings world class privacy experts of diverse backgrounds and perspectives to share their points of view with us each month.

Masooda Bashir
Associate Professor, School of Information Sciences
Masooda Bashir received degrees in mathematics, computer science, and psychology and earned her PhD in psychology from Purdue University. She worked for several years as a systems analyst, technical trainer, manager, and global manager for a number of corporations in Silicon Valley, including Lotus and IBM. Most recently, she was the assistant director for social trust initiatives in the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois. In addition, Bashir has led multiple ITI educational initiatives, including the summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates internship program and the Illinois Cyber Security Scholarship Program. She teaches courses in privacy in the internet age, information assurance, ethics of cybersecurity, and digital forensics.

Madelyn Sanfilippo
Assistant Professor, School of Information Sciences
Madelyn Rose Sanfilippo is an assistant professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research empirically explores governance of sociotechnical systems, as well as outcomes, inequality, and consequences within these systems. Using mixed-methods, including computational social science approaches and institutional analysis, she addresses research questions about: participation in and legitimacy of sociotechnical governance; social justice issues associated with sociotechnical governance; privacy in sociotechnical systems; and differences between policies or regulations and sociotechnical practice. Her work practically supports decision-making in, management of, and participation in a diverse public sphere.

Yang Wang
Associate Professor, School of Information Sciences
Yang Wang is an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He co-directs the Social Computing Systems (SALT) Lab. He was previously an assistant professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University and a research scientist in CyLab at Carnegie Mellon University. His research is centered around usable privacy and security, and social computing. His work has appeared in news media such as The New York TimesWall Street Journal, BBC, and China Daily. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Department of Health and Human Services, Google, Alcatel-Lucent, and The Privacy Projects. He received his PhD in information and computer science from the University of California, Irvine.
