Demand that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus commit to carbon neutrality by 2033.

Climate change is a clear and present danger to our society. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign aspires to be the pre-eminent public research university with a land-grant mission and global impact, and our actions must reflect the consensus of the scientific community. Research conducted on this campus has repeatedly demonstrated the need to take immediate action, but our response fails to address the urgency of the situation. Carbon neutrality by 2050 is unacceptable, particularly given our campus’ stated leadership in sustainability. This date is far behind those of some of our colleagues: Cornell University has committed to carbon neutrality by 2035, the University of Florida, the University of California system, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh by 2025, and Duke University by 2024, showing a much earlier date is not unprecedented. The students of this University demand immediate action be taken to reduce the carbon footprint of our campus. We urge you to commit this university to reach carbon emission neutrality by 2033.
