I believe my writing life is like baking cookies. Writing is a process and so is baking cookies.

Before you can bake the cookies, the ingredients are all separate. These are like my ideas. In the beginning of writing a paper, all I have are different ideas about a certain topic just like all of the different ingredients that belong to the “topic” of cookies.

Then, I start putting all of the ideas together to start writing the paper. This is just like combining all the ingredients to make the dough for the cookies. The dough is like the rough draft. All the ideas (ingredients) are there, but it is not finished yet.

I have often seen chefs, or anybody for that matter, taste the dough before making the cookies and decide if it needs anything more, such as a “pinch of salt”. This is like revising your rough draft. You analyze it and decide what needs to be added and revised.

Finally, once you decide that all of the necessary components are there, you can finally cook up a final draft, which is the final product, the delicious cookies.

Just don’t eat your final draft. 🙂
