Law Faculty Syllabus Statements

Michael Leroy

‘We are concerned about academic fraud, but we also see potential benefits to GPT pedagogy and research. For now, please be mindful of the law school’s (and UIUC’s) policies on academic integrity. I used GPT this weekend to get an answer for Owen Fiss’s “Against Settlement.” Scroll to the bottom for the answer. I thought this answer had a shallow Cliff Notes or Nutshell quality, nothing more than that. It is C- (or worse).  It’s such a shame because “Against Settlement” is so rich and powerful! I trust you will all do better on your answers, whatever the question. But hypothetically, if you use ChatGPT for your work, please footnote it. Show how you are using it. As a labor economist colleague at LER noted, ‘The challenge for all of with GPT is to understand how we can add unique human value to this powerful technology.'”
