Required Textbooks

We require (and use) two different books for this summer course, and strongly recommend e-Text versions of both, since the course is completely online.

The one we will use for most of the first half of the course is called Biology, 11th edition, by Raven, et al. and published by McGraw-Hill. The e-Text is actually delivered through their course management system called Connect, which has a tremendous amount of optional functionality. It’s important to note that Connect is the course management system, while Connect Plus is the system with the e-Text inside it. You will therefore need to choose the Connect Plus option. This item is available directly from McGraw-Hill at a cost of $125.00. Following the link in the previous sentence, you can enter your access code, purchase an access code, or get help with either of these options.

The second book we will use, primarily for the second half of the course, is called The Cell: A Molecular Approach, 7th edition, by Geoffrey M. Cooper and published by Oxford University Press. This item is available as an e-Text as well, and purchased most efficiently through a digital delivery platform called RedShelf at a cost of $83.95.

If you prefer printed pages, both of these publishers have options for acquiring printed pages instead of or in addition to your digital order. For the Raven text, the offer shows up on your purchase screen. For the Cooper text, a hardback version can be ordered directly from Oxford University Press, with an ISBN of 978-1-60535-290-9.

The Cooper text also has a Looseleaf (LL) option. Exact same printed copy, three-hole punched pages to be inserted in a 3 ring binder (binder not included). Call your order in to Customer Service at 1-800-445-9714, and reference ISBN: 978-1-60535-540-5.

Please note: neither of our course resources are listed on the Illini Union Bookstore web site at the moment. We are attempting to fix this, and appreciate your patience if you need to buy your materials through the IUB.
