Student Opportunities for After-School Resources (SOAR) University of Illinois Campus Visit

We will be hosting an outreach event for a group of Latina/o elementary students on campus on Thursday, May 5th! If you see us on the Quad or the Main Library, please stop and say hello!  Approximately 40 elementary students will visit the University of Illinois and enjoyed a lecture on the importance of reading by Professor Nancy O’Brien who also serves as the Librarian for the Education and Social Science Library.
The SOAR after-school tutoring program was created in response to the urgent needs of low-income students (predominately new Latino immigrants) who lacked access to
affordable and appropriate after-school supports to help them achieve success in school. Children who attend SOAR are enrolled in a transitional bilingual program during the school day. SOAR serves up to 40 Latino children (grades 2-5) from low-income families and operates three days per week throughout the school year.
