Science Camp Counselor

 

Four camp counselors are needed for the UIUC Prairie Research Institute Summer Science Camp which will be held July 15-19, 2013. The general duties of a counselor will be to co-lead and supervise a group of up to 13 high school juniors and seniors through scheduled camp activities. The Prairie Research Institute Science Camp is a non-residential camp. All counselors will be on duty from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM during the week of July 15-19, 2013.

Requirements:
• Student entering their junior or senior year at UIUC, or a graduate student at UIUC
• Knowledge of one or more of the following topics: Geology, Archaeology, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Hydrology or related fields
• Energy and enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
• Able to work effectively as an individual leader within a supportive team environment
• Flexible, able to deal with change, and able to come up with fun new activities/plans of action on the spot
• Able to be responsible at all times for the whereabouts, safety, and well-being of 13 young men and women
• Fun, happy, approachable demeanor
• Comfortable acting as a role model for impressionable young men and women
• Available for pre-camp planning communications (reliable and timely communications via email is highly preferred)
• Available for preliminary camp training for several hours in the spring/early summer
• Able to pass a university security background check

Preferred Qualities:
• Knowledge of at least two of the following topics: Geology, Archeology, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Hydrology or related fields
• Past experience dealing with young men and women in a camp setting or similar

Time Commitment:
• Monday through Friday the week of July 15-19, 2013, from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM
• Some preliminary training for several hours for safety procedures, vehicle operation, and first aid sometime prior to the camp

Salary:
• $550 stipend paid at the end of the camp
