Yuan, LEED GA, is a Ph.D student at the Illinois School of Architecture. He holds a M.Arch. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a Bachelor of Art degree from China Academy of Art.
His research focuses on transformable structures and its application on adaptive architecture under the supervision of Professor Krishnan. Currently he works on scissor-based deployable structures, including form-finding, kinematic analysis, and joint design. He also studies the design of emergency shelters using this kind of structures, which are light-weight, transportable and are rapidly deployable. Yuan believe that applicable design of kinetic structures will strongly improve the function and efficiency of architecture and hence benefit people’s life. In the field of architectural design, Yuan is the winner of “Chicago Award in Architecture competition, AIA”, “2018 SARAs National Design Award”, and “Graduate Design Excellence Award, UIUC”.
