Did you know that roughly 75% of flowering plant species depend on the pollination activity of animals? Or that 1/3 of all foods required a pollination event? Or that pollination is estimated to contribute $200 billion annually to the global economy?
Here at UIUC we not only study insect pollinators, but also celebrate them! In an effort to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of pollinators among the Champaign-Urbana community EGSA is committed to participating in National Pollinator Week every June! We use this as an opportunity to open a public dialogue and engage in informative and fun pollinator-related activities.
Pollinator Week Activities
- Disseminating helpful pollinator related information at a booth at the local farmer’s market.
- Working with local restaurants and grocery stores to highlight foods impacted by native pollinators.
- Pollinator themed trivia nights at local restaurants.
- Prairie tours to help people learn pollinator identification.
