Driving & Parking

Driving Tips

The University of Illinois is conveniently located at the junction of I 57,  I 74 and I 72.  All roads lead to the School of Information Sciences, the iSchool at Illinois!

Parking On Campus

If you are planning to drive to and park on campus, we recommend you make parking plans and arrangements before arriving for Summer Getaway at the iSchool. We ask this to ensure that your arrival goes smoothly, as parking on and around campus can be tricky, scarce, and strictly enforced.

You can park in adjacent campus lots or in metered street parking. We have created a 2022 Summer Getaway Map with the closest campus lots to the new iSchool building, 614 E. Daniel St., highlighted for your convenience. For more information on parking, please visit the University Parking website.

Visitor Parking in Campus Lots

    • A permit is required to park in university lots 6:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday
    • Most university lots are open to park without a permit from 5:00 pm – 2:00 am
    • Housing lots and 24-hour lots are restricted at all times
    • 24-hour rental spaces and handicap spaces are enforced at all times

Restrictions are specified on signs at lot entrances. Day Visitor and Temporary Visitor permits may be purchased at the Parking Department at $14/day. Contact Parking for more information at 217-333-3530.

Accessibility Parking

A vehicle displaying a valid state accessibility placard or disability plate may park at designated public accessible spaces or any meter while paying the appropriate meter fee.  Only State of Illinois issued Meter-Exempt placards (yellow and gray striped), issued by the State of Illinois to persons with permanent disabilities who have a significant impairment causing difficulty accessing a parking meter, are exempt from meter payment.  These placards are exempt the authorized holder from payment of parking meter fees and time limitations, except at meters or signs with time limitations of 30 minutes or less. All other State of Illinois and out of state accessibility permits, permanent or temporary, DO NOT exempt authorized holders from payment of parking fees or time limitations.

Metered Parking

There are over 2,000 University of Illinois meters on campus, which are identified by a “Block I” (see example below). Meter rates of $1/hour may be paid by coins (quarters, dimes, or nickels), or Pay By App. Posted on each meter are the hours of enforcement and maximum time limits, which include 30 minutes, and 2, 8, or 10 hours.
