Welcome to the Social Dynamics of Language Variation and Change Reading Group (/IPRH Seminar) page!

We are an interdepartmental group of faculty and students who have been meeting weekly or biweekly, since Spring 2007. Our focus is on multilingualism, sociolinguistics, languages contact, languages variation, and language change. Our focus is on language contact between different types of speakers, and of linguistic varieties in oral, written, and digital communication, and how the social dynamics of the contact is impacting uses of the languages in the process. We draw from linguistics and cognitive science, and from the social and behavioral sciences to examine the sociopolitical and ideological contexts and modes of language contact in order to discuss outcomes of language variation and change in multilingual settings. In addition to discussing newly published readings, we continue to focus on hypothesis formation and hands-on methods of data analysis. [IPRH Reading Group]
