Welcome to the Social Dynamics of Language Variation and Change (SDLVC) Reading Group (/IPRH Seminar) page!
SDLVC is an interdepartmental group of faculty and students who meet every two weeks to discuss bi/multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language contact, language variation, and language change. We focus on reading the latest literature regarding linguistic varieties in oral, written, and digital communication, and how the social dynamics of language contact impact language use. We also welcome and encourage both students and faculty to present their original research.
SDLCV has been meeting since Spring 2007. We draw from linguistics and cognitive science, and from the social and behavioral sciences to examine the sociopolitical and ideological contexts and modes of language contact in order to discuss outcomes of language variation and change in multilingual settings. In addition to discussing newly published readings, we continue to focus on hypothesis formation and hands-on methods of data analysis. [IPRH Reading Group]
During Spring 2025, we met face-to-face (unless otherwise noted) every other Wednesday from 12 – 1 pm. We are currently setting up our meeting time for Fall 2025. We will be back for more information soon.
