In the fall of 2018, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announced its new strategic plan, “The Next 150.” Now is an opportune time for Student Affairs to engage in its own strategic planning process that will build upon the campus’ plan and define our role in shaping the Illinois experience. Our university and our division are among the best in higher education, a good foundation to build upon, indeed.

The Student Affairs strategic plan will be progressive and focused on transformative learning experiences, student success, and service to our local and global communities. The process will incorporate the ideas of our entire Student Affairs community, and those with whom we collaborate closely across campus, in reevaluating our vision, mission, values, goals, initiatives, and metrics, and in creating a roadmap leading to accomplishment.

What is strategic planning?

Strategic planning is a process that helps us examine the current state of Student Affairs, determine a desired future state, establish priorities, and define a set of actions to achieve specific measured outcomes. The process aims to answer three key questions:

      • What do the forces of change in society and higher educations mean for our students
      • What’s our approach to dealing with these challenges and opportunities?
      • What must we do to succeed for our students?
