paul-rolland-logo-dark-blue-frame-recropped-copyThe pedagogy of Paul Rolland has revolutionized the string teaching profession. In the Paul Rolland String Camp, young violin, viola and cello students will be challenged with not only playing correct notes, but will be taught to develop freedom of movement in playing, free from excessive tension. Students will take part in small and large group instruction with our engaging and experienced faculty and showcase what they have learned at the end of the week. The camp will offer a window into Paul Rolland pedagogy not just for students, friends and family, but also for the dozens of string teaching professionals visiting Urbana-Champaign for the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Workshop.

What our past participants are saying:

“O.C. attended the Paul Rolland String Camp for the first time this year and had a terrific experience! Although she was part of the Junior Camp that lasted only 2 hours a day, that time proved more than helpful in improving her technique and confidence in playing the instrument. In fact, she came home on day 3 of the camp announcing that she likes violin ‘a whole lot more now!’ We couldn’t be more delighted hearing that. Thank you for all your patience teaching her. This is a wonderful way for her to spend her time during the summer months and we look forward to participating in this camp again next year!”

“Not only did I learn a lot, but I also found it fun and the techniques we learned have improved the way I play.” – J.A.

“S.G. enjoyed the camp a great deal, and I noticed great changes in her playing.  Her teacher commented on her vibrato being beautiful. Thank you very much for organizing the camp!  It was a wonderful experience for both my S.G. and I.”

I had so much fun this week. Thank you for the wonderful gifts. I have learned so much in this camp. Thank you for showing me the Paul Rolland way.” – M.P.

“I loved how the campers learned to move while they played and the focus on reducing tension. I also enjoyed the Mountain Creek song, which we have used for some other performances. K.C. enjoyed being part of an ensemble, and she liked that there was an upper and lower division and how they split apart but also worked all together.”

The Paul Rolland String Camp is a program of the Illinois String Academy of the School of Music of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
