Social Justice Education Paraprofessionals – Applications Due December 12

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until December 12th for 2018-2019 Social Justice Education Paraprofessionals! Complete your application here.

The Social Justice Educator Paraprofessional Program is a 3-semester peer education program powered by students for students. The Social Justice Education Paraprofessional Program is designed to promote diversity and student leadership by providing intensive training for students in areas of knowledge, awareness, and skills related to issues of diversity and social justice. Through this program, paraprofessionals serve as a campus leaders in social justice by developing and facilitating educational programs for the campus. Social Justice Education Paraprofessionals receive 11 advanced credit hours in Psychology. For more information, click on this link.

Interested in social justice or education policy? Explore these in the post-conflict setting of Northern Ireland at Queen’s University Belfast.
Interested in the performing arts? Practice combat and swordplay, movement, dance and design at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.
Interested in arts as activism? Consider how social policy, philosophy and the arts have been combined to promote social change at the University of Bristol.

DUE THIS SATURDAY, DEC. 8–University of Illinois Latina/Latino Alumni Association Scholarship. Open to Latina/Latino undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during the 2018-2019 academic school year. In honor of our ten year anniversary and thanks to a generous donor, IllinoisLLAA is able to grant two $5,000 scholarships to either an undergraduate or graduate student, one of which is reserved for an undocumented student. DUE DEC.31–Health and Wellness $2,000 Scholarship. Available to students enrolled at an accredited college or university. You must have at least a 3.4 GPA and submit an essay of 800-1000 words, promoting a practical approach to healthy lifestyle during college years and how these habits can be sustained over a lifetime. Pre-Law 101 – NEXT Tuesday, November 13, 4-5pm, 514 IUB

This workshop is designed for incoming students who are new to pre-law or are interested in learning more about it. We will cover: What it means to be pre-law at Illinois, course selection, majors, and extracurriculars, building a pre-law resume, and what law schools are really looking for. We will outline a four year plan to maximize your undergraduate experiences in order to make a great law school candidate. We’ll also take any questions about law school and legal careers. This is the last Pre-Law 101 session for the fall semester. Incoming students should attend a Pre-Law 101 prior to setting up an individual pre-law advising appointment. Upcoming PLAS Event — Perfecting Your Personal Statement and Resume for Law School — Tuesday, November 27, 4-5pm, 514 Illini Bookstore Building

This workshop will discuss how to draft a personal statement and resume for a law school application. We will cover:

Ideas for personal statement topics
How to get started writing it
What to include and exclude
Length, structure, and formatting details
Law school resume tips
How to have the resume and personal statement coordinate; and
A 5 step plan for writing the personal statement and resume.

Are you an Illinois undergraduate looking for your next internship experience?
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is looking for highly motivated, creative students to work on hands-on research projects with guidance from NCSA staff and faculty affiliates. The center will offer a limited number of paid SPIN (Students Pushing INnovation) internships during the the Summer 2019 session. The SPIN projects are open to students in any major and any year of study; international students can apply.

Udall Scholarship Information Sessions: THIS Thursday, November 8 and Friday, November 9

Are you a passionate environmentalist? Do you want to devote your career to addressing environmental concerns?

The University of Illinois seeks to nominate sophomores and juniors for the prestigious Udall Scholarship. The Udall awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors who are taking action to address environmental concerns and are committed to a career related to the environment.

Please note that there are special awards also for Native American students interested in tribal policy or health care (no need to be related to the environment).

Students must be US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents. A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. The University of Illinois may nominate up to six students for the Udall Scholarship. The campus deadline is February 7, 2019 to be considered.

The Goldwater is for juniors or exceptional sophomores who are current U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or resident aliens. The Goldwater awards one- or two-year $7,500 awards to students who demonstrate strong evidence of contributing to the technological advances of the U.S. Applicants should be committed to pursuing a Ph.D in the research fields of mathematics, sciences, or engineering. Perfecting Your Personal Statement and Resume for Law School–TODAY, Monday, Sept.17, 4-5pm, 514 IUB. The personal statement is one of the most difficult yet powerful elements of the law school application. Join us for this workshop, which will cover what the personal statement is, how to prepare for writing it, and some tips and suggestions for making it reflect an applicant’s strengths. We will also discuss how the personal statement and resume can complement each other to create a stronger law school application.

THE ILLINOIS CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS: Application Deadline October 13!

Diverse and welcoming, The Illinois Club draws its membership from all areas of the University as well as the surrounding community. Since 1915, The Illinois Club has provided financial support to worthy undergraduate students. This year, we will be giving out the following scholarships:

Isabelle Purnell Education Awards of $3,000 • The Judith Life Ikenberry Fine Arts Award of $5,500

General Eligibility: You must be an undergraduate, have earned at least 60 credit hours by the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester, and graduate no earlier than December 2019 to apply. A minimum GPA of 2.75 at both the time of application and winning of award is also required.

David F. Prindable Undergraduate PAID Internship at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH): Communications and Undergraduate Outreach: Applications DUE Friday, September 28!

Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in communications and undergraduate outreach at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH), the campus humanities hub. The successful candidate will assist IPRH with its communications strategy, particularly its email communications and social-media presence, in addition to serving as a IPRH’s undergraduate liaison and chief strategist on undergraduate engagement. This position is funded thanks to a generous gift from David F. Prindable.

To be considered for this internship, candidates must possess strong writing and communications skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and an investigative mind. A broad interest in the humanities is preferred.

The position commences October 15, 2018 and ends May 15, 2019. The Prindable intern will work approximately two to three hours per week, for 24 weeks, at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $1,000 per year). There is flexibility regarding the hours to be worked.

The Office of Undergraduate Research is Hiring a PAID Graphic Design Intern

Graphic Design Intern: The Illinois Office of Undergraduate Research is seeking a motivated and experienced undergraduate student to assist with creating innovative and visually impactful graphics for the office. The graphic design intern will be expected to work from 5 – 10 hours per week (workstation and required software will be provided). This is a PAID internship at $12/hour. Federal Work Study designation is required.

Primary Responsibilities:

Assist with layout, design, and production of flyers, digital/web graphics, office brochures, and other print/digital resources, consistent with current office branding.
Assist with converting digital assets to web-ready formats.
Assist with other projects as needed.

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is now accepting applications for the Research Support Grant (RSG). This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs. We hope that this competition will both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields. Scholarship opportunity for those entering law school this fall

The ABA Diversity Scholarship is designed for underrepresented students who demonstrate financial need and community involvement. Awards will be $15,000 for entering law students, which is renewable for years 2 and 3 of law school. Applicants must be entering law school in 2017 and submit an application, personal statement, and statement of financial need by March 2. Find the application and more details here.

Pre-Law 101 Workshop TODAY – Monday October 31, 3-4pm, 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building

This workshop is designed for incoming students who are new to pre-law or are interested in learning more about it. We will cover: what it means to be pre-law at Illinois; course selection, majors, and extracurriculars; building a pre-law resume; and what law schools are really looking for. We will outline a four year plan to maximize your undergraduate experiences in order to make a great law school candidate. We’ll also take any questions about law school and legal careers. Although registration for this event has closed, we will be able to accommodate students on a first-come, first served basis. Each Pre-Law 101 session is the same. Incoming students should attend a Pre-Law 101 session prior to setting up an individual pre-law advising appointment.

Personal Statement and Resume Workshop – NEXT Tuesday, November 8, 4-5pm, Room 503, Illini Union Bookstore Building

The personal statement is one of the most difficult yet powerful elements of the law school application. Join us for this workshop, which will cover: What the personal statement is, how to prepare for writing it, and some tips and suggestions for making it reflect an applicant’s strengths. Great Opportunities This Week Across Campus

Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program — Deadline Wednesday, November 2!

Now in its second year of collaboration, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) and the Graduate College offer the opportunity for first and second-year undergraduate students (including transfer students) to assist advanced graduate students (those who have completed all coursework requirements and are in the dissertation research stage) with their research projects. Through a one-on-one research experience with their graduate student mentor, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to learn what it means to do research, create knowledge, and produce scholarship. Undergraduate students will begin work with their mentors in Spring 2017.

Undergraduate researchers will be given flexible course credit, at a minimum of 2 (equal to approximately 6 hours per week) and a maximum of 3 credit hours (equal to approximately 9 hours per week). Undergraduate students will attend regular (biweekly, i.e., every other week) class meetings with OUR and Grad College instructors, as well as work one-on-one with their graduate mentors. Students will also complete a final project, consisting of a research poster, to be presented during “Undergraduate Research Week” sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR). As we explained in an earlier blog post, most law schools will offer tours or open houses for prospective applicants. Law School Open Houses and Tours – To Go or Not to Go?

The answer: go! Try to attend as many open houses and tours as you can. Make the time now to attend these events to visit the school, see what you think of the location, observe a class or two if possible, and consider other factors that are important to you. Attending open houses will make your law school decision much easier later on.

Once you decide to attend a law school open house or tour, here are a few things you should do.

REGISTER! Make you are following the school’s directions and reserve a spot for the open house or tour.
Dress professionally for the event. Likely the open houses will have a business casual dress code. Tours may be more casual attire, but check with the school and see what they encourage prospective students to wear.
Read the website and be familiar with the time, date, where to park, and what to bring to the event.

Also, research schools that you are considering out of state. Most schools offer open houses throughout the year and regular tours. Make use of the week off for Thanksgiving break and the long winter break for farther distance trips. Schedule these events early!

Law School Interviews and Campus Visits

Most law schools do not offer interviews as part of the application process, but for those that do, an interview can be the difference between acceptance and rejection. Northwestern, for example, considers interviews one of their prime assessment tools in evaluating prospective students. Other schools may only offer interviews to select individuals. If you are interested in learning more about schools that offer interviews, check out our Compass page linked below.

If a school offers an interview program as a part of the application process, participation is strongly encouraged. When preparing for an interview, treat it as if you were interviewing for a job. Practice as much as possible for your interview by using the resources on campus, on the internet and in your personal network. Before you begin practicing, research your prospective school and learn to become comfortable answering questions about yourself, the school and why you see yourself there.

For similar experiences at schools that do not offer an interview program, applicants may be interested in campus visits. Campus visits will not be considered in the application process, but they still provide valuable insight into the schools and what they look for in their students. Speaking with current students, sitting in on a class and meeting some of the faculty will aid prospective students as they narrow their choices.

If any applicants are interested in practicing interviewing, please contact Career Services to conduct a mock interview. The experience presents a wonderful opportunity to eliminate nervousness, while receiving valuable feedback.

Perfecting Your Personal Statement & Resume for Law School: Next Monday, September 21, 4:00 – 5:00 pm in IUB 514.

The personal statement and resume are a law school applicant’s opportunity to tell a school all about yourself and why you will make a great addition to their class. Students consistently tell us that this is the hardest part of the application, so we have developed this workshop to provide some insight. We will cover: what the personal statement is; how to begin writing it; what to include and exclude; writing separate addenda; how the personal statement and resume should work together; and an overview of the law school resume. Bring your questions because there will be plenty of time to ask them. Please register here.

Volunteer Opportunities at the College of Law

Interested in getting an inside view of law school as law students learn trial skills?

Volunteer witnesses are needed for three hours the evening of Sept. 29 and/or Sept. 30 (Tues. or Wed.). Witnesses would get some basic training, a script and exposure to being on the witness stand. No knowledge required. It is all in the information. Witnesses are needed to testify on fingerprint, DNA, medical evidence and cause of death. Volunteer jurors are needed to hear opening statements from College of Law students enrolled in the Trial Advocacy Program from 6:30-9:00pm October 13 and 14 at the Champaign County Courthouse. You may volunteer for one night or more. Opening statements are from a homicide and a serious personal injury case. Contact Julie Campbell, jjhill@illinois.edu or 333-5842 to sign up.

Events at the College of Law

Adam Liptak will deliver “The Roberts Court at Ten: A Reporter’s Reflections” for the fall 2015 Paul M. Van Arsdell, Jr. Memorial Lecture on Litigation and the Legal Profession on Tuesday, September 15, at Noon, in the Max L. Rowe Auditorium at the College of Law, 504 East Pennsylvania Avenue. Liptak is the Supreme Court correspondent of The New York Times. Lunch will be provided for lecture attendees. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The COL will host a Constitution Day Panel: The Roberts Court Turns Ten on Sept. 17 at 12:00 pm in the Rowe Auditorium of the Law Building. College of Law Dean Vikram David Amar and Professors Eric Johnson, Kurt Lash, Jason Mazzone, and Robin Fretwell Wilson will discuss the decisions of the Supreme Court over the past decade and where the Court is headed in the future. Lunch will be provided for lecture attendees.

Michigan State University College of Law will host a variety of FREE webinars this fall for college students and graduates who are exploring or planning for law school. As noted below, webinars will focus on LSAT preparation, preparing a personal statement, financing law school, and legal careers.

Webinar presenters are highly experienced content-area experts (including pre-law advisors; the former director of Harvard Law School admissions; the former dean of admissions at the University of Virginia Law School; and legal career consultants and professionals).
