The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the National Food Authority of the Philippines are pilot-testing a rice-hull furnace (RHF) in order to provide an alternative to sun-drying paddy, which is often delayed due to the wet season harvest and leads to significant PHL. Small-scale paddy dryers have not been adopted by farmers throughout the country due to the high costs of kerosene and thus the pilot-tested dryers have been made with the RHF adaptations, with rice hulls used as an energy source.
