FAQ

BELOW ARE A LIST OF FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR THE TRADITIONAL SECTIONS OF FSHN 120.  FEEL FREE TO SKIM THE PAGE AND IF YOU ARE STILL UNSURE ABOUT ANYTHING OR WANT TO CHAT WITH THE LEAD INSTRUCTOR, CONTACT TONI GIST BY STOPPING BY 439 BEVIER HALL OR E-MAILING HER AT BURKHALT@ILLINOIS.EDU

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!

I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR. A FRIEND SAID SHE IS RELATIVELY NEW TO UIUC…CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT HER?

We have a page dedicated to getting to know the instructor and see student feedback.  Check it out at: https://publish.illinois.edu/nutrition-fshn120/consider120/

I WANT TO ADD THE CLASS BUT….

  • I am a freshman and I need to meet with my academic adviser prior to switching into FSHN 120.
    • Not to worry!  Send Toni an e-mail at Burkhalt@Illinois.edu and she will ensure you are taken care of.
  • I am taking over 18 credit hours, and I am unable to add it through the online system.
    • Again, not to worry.  If it is in your best interest, your adviser can decide to allow an “overload” if it promotes successful progress in your program.
  • The semester already started.
    • FSHN 120 is designed to allow students to be successful and earn 100%+ even if they add the class two weeks into a traditional semester.
  • The class is full.
    • If you login to Course Explorer and place a “star” next to the section you are interested, you will receive an email if a seat opens.  You can then register for your desired section securing a seat before someone else does.

ARE THERE ANY PREREQUISITES TO TAKE THE CLASS?

Wonderful news…we do not have any prerequisite to hold you back from taking FSHN 120.  We would love to see as many students as possible study this life changing subject. So, if you are a student at UIUC we believe that you have all of the skills/academic background needed for success and we will not restrict your enrollment. The FSHN 120 teaching team will provide all of the information needed for success and you will earn course credit that is representative of the work you complete in this course alone.  Simply put, any UIUC student can earn credit for FSHN 120 that will count towards their academic progress (regardless of the prior coursework).

TELL ME ABOUT OFFICE HOURS AND YOUR FSHN 120 TUTORING CENTER:

Although there is “one voice” with Toni as the lead instructor and only lecturer, we have a full teaching team excited and prepared to help you in our Virtual Tutoring Center (link provided in the course platform) as well as a face-to-face Traditional Tutoring Center. Our teaching team consists of the lead instructor, Graduate Students majoring in the field as well as Undergraduate Learning Leaders (ULL) who successfully completed FSHN 120 with an A or higher in semesters past. We welcome all students to stop by the either Tutoring Center location with any course related questions and we will gladly provide tutoring with a member of our teaching team. Please, check the course announcements in Canvas for any updates/revisions with the teaching team schedule.

Plus, many of our teaching team are bilingual and may be able to help explain in your native language!

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT NUTRITION RIGHT NOW.  I LIVE IN THE DORMS AND WANT TO USE MYFITNESSPAL TO HELP ASSESS MY NUTRIENT INTAKE.  WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT?

With so many students at UIUC, many of you have entered information into the MyFitnessPal database.  If you type out the name of whatever you’re eating then add “UIUC” at the end, My Fitness Pal will be able to pull it up from its database! I did the same thing and majority of the meals are in there.  If you are unable to find your food from the dorms, you can always use the nutrition facts found in the dining app (link below) to add the food itself into the database for other users!

I UNDERSTAND THAT THE BOOKSTORE LISTS PURCHASES FOR THE CLASS: A NOTES PACKET (less than $50 with all notes and assignments to work through)

All students are required to aquire the student notes packet / book for FSHN 120.  It can be purchased directly from the publisher (see syllabus for link).  This is the singular required purchase for FSHN 120.  Please, budget to acquire one as the 250+ page  notes packet as engagement with the materials within the notes packet / book is expected and select pages will need to be photographed and uploaded into the learning management system for grading.

WHO DO I TURN TO FOR REPUTABLE NUTRITION INFORMATION WHILE IN THE CLASS AND FOLLOWING THE END OF THE SEMESTER?

I MISSED A DEADLINE…HOW WILL THE MISSED WORK IMPACT MY GRADE?

I have had students share that they have or will be missing the first set of deadlines for the class.  I have had many different reasons in the past:

  • They have not purchased the student notes packet yet and they don’t feel comfortable submitting something without that resource
  • They don’t have access to Canvas as they just registered (if you e-mail me your NetID, student e-mail, UIN, and contact information I can add you immediately following me reading your e-mail.)
  • They just got added and not have much time (the entire week of getting started module materials actually only take 20 minutes or less total)
  • They want to meet with me first and they are booked before the deadline (post on the HELP discussion board and we can tackle any question…we are in this together)
  • They forgot about a course deadline
  • ETC….

We are telling all students the same thing.  DO NOT WORRY…all students have two drop video quizzes and two drop assignments for any or all reasons.  That reason can be that they were legitimately very ill, they had a death in the family, they forgot about the deadline, they didn’t like the way the assessment looked to them as they need to get used to the class, or any of the other above bulleted reasons.  The two drop module items in each category are there for reasons listed as well as many other reasons not listed.  Because it is very generous to have two drop items in each category and we grade and return items very quickly following a deadline, we are unable makeup work in those categories.  I am sure you understand.

*Note: see the syllabus regarding makeup work if you have missed three+ assessments in any category (ex: video quiz).

If you have questions about the course policies or grading, feel free to see the course syllabus.  Keep in mind the syllabus is a contract for the course.  As such, we need to abide by it.  If you want to discuss a personal situation with the instructor, stop by her office hours in the Virtual Tutoring Center (see syllabus tab above) and she can help you!
