Donald L. Burton Veterinary Student Scholarship – National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association

  • Purpose: Scholarship is awarded to a veterinary student to help cover expenses of attending the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Symposium.
  • Amount of Award: $500
  • Selection Process: Fill out online application, upload 2 signed letters of recommendation and show proof of student status
  • Deadline: November 1, 2021

Ed Hiestand Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship – National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association

  • Purpose: Scholarship is awarded to a veterinary student to help cover expenses of attending the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Symposium.
  • Amount of Award: $1000
  • Selection Process:  This scholarship provides an opportunity for veterinary students to present at the NWRA symposium and publish in a peer-reviewed journal. Call for papers is open to all veterinary students, topics should relate to a veterinary aspect of wildlife rehabilitation (diagnosis, transmission, pathogenesis, treatment, and disease prevention; a case report; a wildlife medicine related study, etc.)
  • Deadline: December 15, 2021

Georgia Fletcher Memorial Award Essay Contest – Quaker Parakeet Society

  • Purpose: To provide a monetary award to a student who is studying exotic/avian medicine at the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine. Selected essays will be published in the Quaker Parakeet Sentinel.
  • Amount of Award: $2,500
  • Selection Process: Please submit an essay telling us why you chose to specialize in exotic/avian medicine? Your answer should be at least one page, but not to exceed three pages.
  • Deadline: Application period for 2021 not open yet.

Oxbow Animal Health Academic Scholarship Program

  • Purpose: To provide a monetary award for students who are currently enrolled in a veterinary school and demonstrate an interest in small and exotic animal medicine.
  • Amount of Award: $2000
  • Selection Process: Complete online application and  submit a resume, 2 letters of recommendation, transcript, proof of enrollment, and a 300-500 word essay on one of the following topics:
    1. The Future of Exotic Animal Medicine
    2. The Role of Nutrition in Animal Health
    3. Two of the Greatest Challenges in Exotic Animal Health
  • Deadline: Application period closed for 2021.

ZuPreem Veterinary Scholarship Program

  • Purpose: To support future exotic animal veterinarians by providing monetary assistance to second, third and fourth year veterinary students.
  • Amount of Award: First place – $2500, second place – $1500, third place – $1000
  • Selection Process: Submit two letters of recommendation and a three-minute video on one of the following topics:
    1. Why do I want to specialize in one of the four fields of exotic animal veterinary medicine?
    2. What is one of your favorite cases you have worked on?  Was it inspiring and/or educational and why?
    3. Who or what inspired you to specialize in exotic animal health?
  • Deadline: Application typically opens mid-August and is due mid-February.

Lafeber Company Student Case Report Contest 

  • Award:
    1. First Place: Three Textbooks (Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents, Fourth Edition, Quesenberry, et al, Exotic Animal Formulary, Fifth Edition, Carpenter and Clinical Veterinary Advisor: Birds and Exotic Pets, Mayer)
    2. Second Place: Two Textbooks (Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents, Fourth Edition, Quesenberry, et al and the Exotic Animal Formulary, Fifth Edition, Carpenter)
    3. Third Place: The famous “pink book”,  Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents, Fourth Edition, Quesenberry, et al
  • Selection Process: Students will submit a two page case write up (not to exceed 1500 words) about an Exotic Companion Mammal case they have seen, either at their college or during their experiences in a clinical setting.
  • Deadline: April 30th, 2021

AAV Student Externship Scholarship

  • Purpose: To support AAV student members entering their clinical year who intend to complete an externship at avian and exotic animal focused private practices, avian services in veterinary teaching hospitals, large wildlife clinics and zoos.
  • Amount of Award: $150 per week for up to 4 weeks
  • Selection Process: Within one month of completing externship, student must submit a log of all avian cases that is signed by the supervising veterinarian and a summary of the experience to be included in AAV newsletter or on website (500-800 words). Additionally, the receiving facility or research project externship coordinator must submit a letter confirming that the student has successfully fulfilled his/her externship.
  • Deadline: January 31, for externships completed in the following 12 months.

John L. Pitts Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Education Awards Program

  • Purpose: To offer financial support each year to a limited number of veterinary students or recent graduates of recognized veterinary schools, allowing recipients to explore a career in aquatic veterinary medicine through a variety of aquatic veterinary educational activities.
  • Amount of Award: $250-$1000
  • Selection Process: Complete application
  • Deadline: Applications typically open in mid-January and close at the end of February.

AEMV Student Conference Scholarship

  • Purpose: To offer financial support for AEMV veterinary student members to attend ExoticsCon, the annual AEMV Conference held in conjunction with ARAV and AAV.
  • Amount of Award: $500
  • Selection Process: Complete online application, including uploading a CV and submitting a brief statement of interest.
  • Deadline: May 31
