Teaching Statement and Personal Philosophy

By continuing in an academic environment, I hope to be able to continue to improve knowledge and skills within the veterinary medical community by offering educational opportunities to individuals at any stage of their education while also placing an emphasis on self-care. In the service leadership model, I aim to do this through leading by example. Aside from meeting necessary clinical and academic duties, a veterinary specialist should also be an example for budding veterinarians to see that a work-life balance is important. When I am at work, I do my job well. However, I also ensure that I make time to pursue extracurricular activities that keep me at an even keel. Whether that is taking a week to go backpacking in Utah, staying active through aerial arts such as lyra, or taking a long motorcycle trip – placing a priority on the balance between your personal and professional self is an important example to set. The next generation of veterinarians needs to see in practice that work is not the only focus of their future. Additionally, I strive to have open communication between departments, administration, house officers, and the student body to enhance the community through my diverse experiences within the veterinary field and aim to include clinician scientists at all levels of their education and professional development who wish to be involved in projects.
