Finding Funding after Aid Runs Out

Students who are looking for funding once an assistantship or tuition waiver expires, particularly through the post-coursework semesters of their doctoral studies when they need to remain enrolled, may find these tips and links useful.

TIP 1:     You will likely need to be proactive and persistent, and look regularly into job openings and fellowship competitions.

TIP 2:     There are campus assistantship, fellowship, and employment opportunities outside of the School of Music. Consider applying for some of them. See these sites:

Assistantship Clearinghouse – www.grad.illinois.edu/clearinghouse

Fellowship Database –https://www.grad.illinois.edu/fellowship/

On-campus jobs:   Research Park jobs – researchpark.illinois.edu/careers

Virtual Job Board: https://secure.osfa.illinois.edu/vjb/

UIUC Career Center: https://www.careercenter.illinois.edu/

TIP 3:     Be prepared to look for music-related jobs and other opportunities beyond campus. International Students should note that they will need to show they are eligible for CPT (Curricular Practical Training) and enroll in MUS 459, if they want to pursue this option.

TIP 4:    If you would like help finding external opportunities, please consult Julie Rundell, (jrundell@illinois.edu), FAA Career Services.

Please know that many of our current graduate students and alumni have been able to find funding by exploring opportunities beyond the School.
